A Maine vacation can offer you lots of things to do, perhaps you want to take the time to go hunting while the rest of the family sees other sites. Hunting in Maine’s Highlands is a great Maine vacation for the true hunter. You can hunt for deer, moose, bear and any number of waterfowl in this region of the state.

Bear hunting is just a 4 week season with a lottery style permit basis. The season generally begins the last week of August into September. You can use bow, rifle, slug gun, mussel loaders, hand guns or maybe you just use a camera. Now, remember that hunting bear isn’t like hunting a deer. Bears are predators and they will attack if given the opportunity. If you hit one and don’t have a kill shot it will hide or run for miles which means you will be tracking for a long, long way. A bear can go 10 to 20 miles into the woods when injured, and they won’t be nice!

Perhaps you are a fisherman and want to try your skill at going for some Native Maine brook trout. You can find streams that will allow you to fish without anyone else anywhere around you. Set your fly into the stream, enjoy the beauty of the area and catch some wonderful fish. You may want to fish for landlocked salmon or pickerel instead. They are abundant too. Try your luck ice fishing in the winter, bring your equipment, snowshoes and enjoy the change of pace during the Maine winter.
